In general, the 2022 LEGO City Advent Calendar is an improvement over last year’s calendar, especially in terms of better builds that are more suitable for younger children and more variety and creativity in the builds. For those reasons, I give this set a 4/5 Stars (Recommended) rating overall. For a Marvel Studios enthusiast, 76231 Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar is a must-have for the 2022 holiday season and most days will have you remembering a scene from the Marvel Studios movies. However, that focus on Easter eggs and references limits its appeal somewhat, as those not as interested in the MCU might struggle to connect with the builds, preferring more festive inclusions for the holiday season. We were given this advent calendar by Lakeland Limited more than 12 years ago. We passed it along to a friend of the family and it’s still brought out every year in their house, and looks good as new.

I was unaware of Advent calendars until a few years ago. My parents were secular, and although my family celebrated Christmas in a broad sense, we focused exclusively on the "family" and "togetherness" parts of the equation, rather than on the religious aspects. Years later, I married a Catholic woman, and I learned more about the ceremonies and the traditions that lead up to Christmas. But it was only when we had our son that I learned about Advent calendars. Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar features 24 days of builds and minifigures to count down to Christmas, all revolving around a specific theme. The current line-up of these seasonal sets ranges from Star Wars to CITY with Marvel being the newest addition to the annual range. However, 76231 Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar is the first to be based on a Marvel Studios project rather than Marvel overall, raising expectations from the 2021 version. Day 13 of the LEGO GOTG Advent Calendar begins to try and make amends for the last few days with a Mantis minifigure!
